Letter from the Dean

Pete Nelson

Much of engineering and computer science involves taking a problem and considering it in a new way. When we do this, problems become opportunities. In this issue of RISE magazine, you will read about several ways our faculty and students are considering crises from new perspectives. This includes new ways of re-using water, new methods of capturing carbon and creating green energy sources, and new computing techniques that harness quantum mechanics.

It is no wonder that in these times, when it seems like problems abound, UIC Engineering faculty and students are thriving. In this issue, you will also find examples of our student successes. Whether interning on major construction projects or finding community through student organizations, our students have learned to flourish in uncertain conditions.

The demand for these skills will only grow, and we continue to attract a new generation to engineering and computer science. Our fall 2022 undergraduate enrollment is expected to reach a new record, for the sixth year in a row. And we continue to adapt as new students come in, offering new majors — including environmental engineering, data science, and computer science + design — to help prepare students for future careers. There is tremendous demand for these majors.

As we start another academic year, I look forward to seeing what innovations our students and faculty come up with next, and I look forward to hearing about how our alumni are using their skills out in the field.
