The build is on
Computer science is the fastest-growing department in the College of Engineering, expected to enroll more than eight times the number of students in fall 2021 as it did 15 years ago.
A construction crew is now doing its best to keep up.
Workers broke ground in July on a 135,000-square-foot new home for the computer science department, whose faculty and students are presently scattered among four buildings on UIC’s east campus. The new structure is designed to support high-quality computer science, data science, and engineering instruction, with collaborative learning areas, state-of the-art labs, a robotics facility, space for students to build community around similar interests, and faculty offices.
It will be environmentally friendly, too. It will feature a geothermal farm and has been designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
