Going green

Students in an environmental engineering class

As issues such as unsafe drinking water and air pollution persist around the globe, professionals in environmental engineering are in increasingly high demand.

This fall, UIC’s Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering will offer a new undergraduate major in environmental engineering, giving students the skill sets to satisfy the growing need for experts in the field in both private and public sectors.

The new BS degree program, which expands on UIC Engineering’s minor in environmental engineering and follows the department’s recent renaming, will offer a curriculum that combines engineering, chemistry, and other areas of science. It will allow students to learn everything from managing waste disposal to mitigating water and air pollution.

Most courses that will be included in the program are currently offered by the department, but the expansion will include new courses such as CME 119 Introduction to Environmental Engineering and Science.

The environmental engineering major will be open to current and incoming UIC students in fall 2022.
