Dr. Antonio DiVenere is an experienced scientist and engineer, who came to UIC in April, 2014, after many years in both the academic and industrial communities.

As an academic researcher at Northwestern University, together with theorists from the Naval Research Laboratory, he investigated molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth of strain-layered semiconductors for use in infrared detectors. In a collaboration with researchers at MIT, superlattice-structure growth of thermoelectric materials was examined for enhanced properties perpendicular to the thin film plane.

During his years at NU, he was responsible for safety in all the clean rooms on campus and directly managed the daily operations of the NSF sponsored Materials Processing and Crystal Growth Facility. This facility consisted of 3000 sq. ft. of Class 100/1000 space with a tool set encompassing photolithography, electron beam/sputtering /thermal deposition, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), reactive ion etching (RIE) and film characterization systems. Crystal growth of III-V semiconductors and superconductors was investigated by MBE and custom-built metal-organic CVD systems, respectively.

As an industrial researcher and manager, he started as an engineer in transistor process development for Gould Electronics’ Corporate R&D Center in Rolling meadows, Illinois; eventually leading to the position of Director of Processing at Nanovation Technologies Inc, a telecomm startup in Northville, Michigan. He was responsible for the daily operations of a 180,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant with over 30,000 sq. ft. of Class 100 production and R&D space and with a tool set optimized for the research, development and manufacture of silicon-based optical waveguides. Most recently, he has consulted on projects from clean room design, construction, and operations to toxic gas abatement and new tool installations. With his wide variety of skills and experiences, he is uniquely qualified to assume the role of Director of the Nanotechnology Core Facility.
