Cultivate a Caring, Connected Community and Culture of Excellence
Given
The College of Engineering’s diverse community is both a defining characteristic and a powerful advantage, but realizing its full potential requires intentional investment in people, systems, and structures.
Given
An environment that supports inclusive pedagogy, meaningful relationships, and active alumni engagement depends on the operational systems that sustain them. By cultivating belonging, connection, and wellness among students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the college strengthens the foundation for excellence and innovation.
A focus on operational and inclusive excellence, organizational structure, infrastructure, and a sustainable budget model will undergird success. Modernizing infrastructure, streamlining processes, breaking down silos, and investing in staff and faculty development ensure that the college not only supports its community in the present but also remains agile and competitive in the future.
Plan Goals
Foster and optimize the benefits of UIC’s diverse community
Our student body, faculty, staff and alumni network possess an array of identities and experiences. These offer opportunities to sharpen perspectives, provide innovative approaches to problem-solving, and cultivate valuable connections that distinguish us in the engineering landscape.
To benefit fully from our composition requires actively fostering belonging, connection and community to sustain excellence and distinction.

Our Strengths
UIC’s respect for the ways in which people perceive and represent themselves is a fundamental advantage not only for solving complex and modern problems, but also for cultivating the University’s identity as a top research institution. Its student, staff and faculty composition draws from the surrounding Chicago area as well as internationally, making it a naturally diverse environment with many perspectives.
Our Goal
By providing comprehensive wellness support for students, cultivating faculty expertise in inclusive pedagogy, breaking down divisions between commuter and residential students, strengthening peer networks, cultivating meaningful faculty-staff relationships, and engaging alumni as active partners in student success, we will create a connected community where all members are able to thrive and contribute to collective achievement.
Desired Impact
Not only will this foster an environment that supports students’ needs so that they can be both academically and professionally successful, it will contribute to a favorable perception of UIC and its ability to uplift communities with which it engages. It will also promote greater alumni investment in our campus, strengthen partnerships with Chicago’s employers, and increase UIC’s allure as the first choice for social mobility and career success for students.
