Postdoctoral researcher Nazifa Rumman sets up an experiment to generate single photons using an optical process called spontaneous parametric downconversion, which converts one photon of higher energy into a pair of photons with lower energy. She uses a camera that can count how many photons arrive at a time—a powerful tool for studying the behavior of light at the quantum level. This marks the beginning of many more quantum optics experiments to come, with potential applications in quantum imaging and secure communication.
