The UIC College of Engineering, along with the student-run Engineering Council, proudly coordinated annual activities to celebrate National Engineers Week. They were assisted by many members of the other engineering student societies at UIC.

This year, UIC College of Engineering hosted 3 corporate speaker presentations on campus, related to the hot engineering topic of the Engineer’s roll in natural disaster prevention and mediation. We welcomed a severe management expert from Exelon to discuss the aftermath of the Fukushima Nuclear Plant Disaster.

Two speakers from the US Army Corps of Engineers to discuss their experience on the recovery mission for the Joplin Missouri Tornado Disaster.

And finally, we had a representative from IDOT to discuss Bridge failures – “Bridge Hits and Dangers.”

The highlight of every National Engineer’s Week at UIC is always the UIC Engineering Career Fair.
careerIt was held on Wednesday, in Student Center East. In attendance were 59 employers with approximately 150 recruiters participating. Many of the recruiters were UIC Engineering Alumnus and were delighted to be back on UIC soil. It was a homecoming of sorts as these various alumni shared stories of their time as UIC COE students and their Engineering experience. Student attendance was high, at almost 900 UIC students in attendance. There were a few alumnus attending as applicants, as well. It is always delightful to hear from the employers why they choose UIC Colllege of Engineering, and what it is about our students that they enjoy. Representatives from the UIC Alumni Career Center, the Office of Career Services and the Liataud School of Business were present to lend a welcome hand, which was appreciated.

To round out the activities of the week, two other formal activites were held: the UIC student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held a student tour of their workshop and laboratory to view developments of the cement canoe and steel bridge designs.

And finally, all were able to celebrate at the end of the week at the annual bowling, pizza and ice cream party on Friday evening.

Thank you to everyone who attended and who helped to support our E-Week activities. Well done!
